The plan of the quarter center of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (MART) has been introduced to Rome, 10 November 2000, near the Ministry for the Cultural Assets and Activities. They are taken part architect Mario Botta, author of the plan, the president of the MART Pietro Monti, the director of the MART Gabriella Belli. The minister for the Cultural Assets and Activities Giovanna Melandri and the President of the Independent province of Trento Lorenzo Dellai has introduced the press conference, explaining the permanent importance of the creation of a circuit of "places of the art", assets not only in the organization of extensions or exposures, but also valid centers for the documentation and the promotion of new searches. The center of the MART of Rovereto will come inaugurated within the spring of the 2002. The plan, intentional from the Independent Province of Trento, the Common one of Rovereto, with the consent and support of the Common one of Trento, has cost approximately ninety billions.
The image of Rovereto's Cultural Pole (new center of the MART) is an empty one: a large court with glazed cover, a opened space, amazingly enclosed between the two prospects of Alberti Palace and Palace of the Grain. The plan, devised from architect Mario Botta, since lives the beginning of the comparison with the constructed atmosphere preexisting: the main axis of Bettini Course, defined like one risen of "eighteenth century drawing-room" and the true hit and just to the new museum, one road locked between the facades of the two buildings, than lets in the public square - foyer. A dialogue between the contemporary and the ancient one, that it has been resolved in shining way like dialogue of full load - empty: superficial elegant flat of the prospects and the glazed luminous entrance hall, nearly an unexpected conclusion to the passage through the blocks of the two palaces. The external covering is in yellow stone of Vicenza, the cover is characterized from the skylights, nearly to weave of a mosaic, disposed around the meager one to emerge of the cone log that surpasses the entrance hall: the way in which the natural light it is disseminated renders different every place, Mario Botta speaks about this "oneness" like of an element that can record on the sight of the exposed art work.
The lighting system of the Museum's rooms nearly is completely entrusted to the natural light, leaked through the skylights, than, in some particular cases, can be shielded: the Cultural Pole is not conceived like a simple container, but like a neutral laboratory, in which the architectonic structure it is made suffused, becomes similar to a thin luminous diaphragm. The distribution of the spaces wheel around to the public square - foyer: to the same one slowly they are it places the informative center and the services to you offers to the visitors (book shop, cafeteria, video room, newsgroups room...), from the entrance hall is approached the Field Arches and Library to you, place to the buried plan, and, through a system of vertical connections, to the first one, space properly deputy to the expositive activity. The first level is divided in two zones, so as to to allow more initiatives at the same time: to the preparations of temporary character it makes reply the exposure of the works of art property of the MART, placed to the last one, in a space of approximately 3000 mq, illuminated directly from the skylights. The permanent collection is constituted from two main nuclei, the Giovanardi collection and the Panza di Biumo collection, before is composed from the '900 works of Italian, the last one comprises examples meant you of the American search between years '80 and '90: an historical - artistic distance of Italian profile is delineated, with opening to the international experiences, nearly to trace a network of direct and possible comparisons it sends back. The idea that spirit the new Cultural Pole is that one of being a center projected " beyond " the closely expositive truth; in the principle program activities are inserted complementary collaterals and to the exposures: encounter, shows, performances will be the necessary counterpoint, also thinking to a new approach with the art to propose the public.
The MART previews a section dedicated to the boys, articulated in laboratories didactic to us, is one proposed already present in the other centers, for the new museum has been estimated one annual frequency of 35000 young people. The search and documentation activity is carried out from the Field Arches and Library to you through two distinguished channels: the international Center of studies of the Futurismo and the Center of Modern and Contemporary Documentation of Dance; the department arranges of a book bottom specialized in contemporary art and visual poetry, articulated between more than 80,000 papers and 40.000 volumes. The study of topics relative the contemporary experimentations places side by side and supports expositive program: the MART proposes a continuity between the different objects of conservation, spreading and possibility of one new cultural production.
The new Auditorium, previewed in a contiguous space to that the museum, is an ulterior example of the plan of Cultural Pole like active and sensitive land really: draft of one knows it from 430 places, planned in shape of amphitheater, equipped in order to receive rappresentazioni teatrali and concerts, to level more low they are placed one recording room and it newsgroups room; from the outside the Auditorium is not visible, neither characterized from some characterizing element the prospect, is "part" of the Museum, nearly to emphasize, also in the constructive particular, like the diversification of the proposals and the fields of action it is time to an only purpose: to know, to observe, to document infinite the possible interactions of "making art". The plan of Mario Botta comprises an area dedicated to the widening of the Civic Library "G. Tartarotti" (the center centers them is to the inside of the Palace of the Grain): a distributed total space of approximately 3350 mq between reading room, specialized consultation room, conservation and recording of video and microfilm room and a gallery for the philolgistic exposures and documents them. The cover is one glazed pyramid, a simple shape, made incorporeal from the transparency, from the variety of the light glares on the superficial ones: structure the lightest appearance, moment of passage between the full load and the empty one.
